Weight Loss Injections

The National Medical Weight Loss Programme (NMWLP) uses Semaglutide which is an FDA approved medication to assist with weight loss.

A simple and painless injection is self - administered each week, using an easy to use pen which is pre - filled with the medication.

How does the treatment work?

This medicine mimics the action of the body's natural hormone (GLP-1), which regulates appetite and food intake. GLP-1 is released into the gut after eating which makes you feel full; leading to your appetite being reduced. It also delays the time it takes for the stomach to empty, keeping you full and satisfied, overall leading to a lower calorie intake and subsequent weight loss.

By reducing your appetite, the NMWLP will help you to keep the calorie - controlled diet of your choices (e.g. Weight Watchers, Slimming World etc), in order to easily achieve your weight loss goals.

How much weight can I expect to lose?

This will vary between individuals, however most people lose around a stone (6.5kg) every 4 - 6 weeks, but this depends on your BMI, will - power and exercise regime.

Are there any health benefits?

The benefits of a weight loss of just 5% of your weight (according to Rethink Obesity Study) include:

  • A reduction in the risk of type 2 diabetes

  • Improvements in blood lipid profile and blood pressure

  • Improvements in osteoarthritic pain

  • Improvements in health - related quality of life.

Are there any side - effects?

As with any medication, following the NMWLP may result in some short - term side effects. The most common side - effects are nausea, indigestion, constipation or diarrhoea, however these usually settle down after a period of time.

Who can have the treatment?

The NMWLP uses medicines that are prescribed for weight loss in conjunction with diet and exercise for adults aged 18 - 75, who have a BMI of 30 or above, or a BMI of 27. We will look at this on your health assessment and provide you with an answer on suitability. Further contraindications include:
